If people can't find your site, it does not matter how good it is.. you will sell nothing! Keywords are what people type into search engine when they are looking for something on the Internet. Hopefully it will be whatever you sell!
Secondly, you absolutely MUST ask for the sale!.
If you look at a great online sales site, they will have both of these aspects absolutely nailed. They will be high in the Search Engine ratings, have a great looking, easy to negotiate web site, and they will ask for the sale.
If your site has maybe only one of these done properly, then you may get lots of visitors to your site, but will get very few sales.. On the other hand, you may be getting few visitors but have a great site and get a super percentage of sales.
It is only when both of these aspects are fully optimised will your sales explode.
Use Google tools to see what people are typing into the search engines when they are looking for what you are selling. If you sell hats, make sure that hats are one of your keywords, along with all the types of hats you can think of or sell on your site. i.e. Stetsons, Straw hats, Trilbys, mens hats, ladies hats, childrens hats, fedoras, etc.etc. Think of what you would type in if you were looking to buy a hat online.
If you look for Google Webmaster Tools, you will find all you need there to optimise your site
When people find your site, you need to capture them immediately. Forget the fancy moving graphics that take ages to load, forget the fancy speeches about how you look after your customers. Make sure that the people that are looking for Hats, as we are using that as an example, see Hats for sale right there on your front page.
Make your site fast.. fancy flash graphics slow things down, and people only have to click a button to go to another site that sells possibly similar things that you do. Make it easy to find what they want, and have clear menus and pathways to different types of products.
Finally.. and possibly the most important ASK FOR THE SALE. Be sure to have a "Buy It Now" button next to every item for sale. It is no good offering things for sale, if prospective customers can't easily see how to purchase them. Think about adding a line in your description, informing the viewer that they can purchase this item just by pressing the "Buy It Now" button that is right there. Make it easy for people to buy from you, and they will.
If you do all of these things, your sales will explode..What do you have to lose? Try them.
