Battling with weight is man’s oldest and longest running engagement! There is a fallacy that one should eat all three meals regardless of whether he or she is hungry or not. Eating foods cooked in butter or pure fat as a sign of prosperity, eating indiscriminately any and every kind of food, without keeping to any schedule.

Before you know it, you have put on weight and along with it have contracted all the ills and ailments. The primary reason for wanting to lose weight is to look good, but this comes secondary to the feeling of wanting to be fit. Some of the weight-related problems are: Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol levels and high blood sugar. Colon and prostrate cancer can also be caused by obesity.

There are many old methods which are still used today to combat weight loss. One of the ways of losing weight was to deliberately starve. Not having proper meals, or going on a binge and then starving was thought to be a good way to lose weight. This is called bulimia and is a very dangerous method. Bulimia is a method by which the person induces vomiting or purging. The person might resort to fasting, or use laxatives, enemas and diuretics.

Over-exercising by such people is common too. Then there is the cabbage soup diet when the only food you eat is cabbage soup. This will help you to lose weight very quickly, but is not highly recommended. The lemonade diet is another way one could lose weight. The negative fall-out is that the person concerned might suffer from mood swings.

Fasting can help in weight reduction, but it has to be done in a controlled manner, otherwise the minute you stop fasting, you will in all likelihood put on a lot of weight when you start eating again. It is only fairly recently that weight reduction is being done in a scientific manner. Old methods were based on feelings, and not very scientifically done.

As a result, the weight lost was regained in full measure, and worse, there were a lot of side effects to cope with. Physical exercise like cycling, swimming, and running were thought of as good ways of losing weight. These are all good. It is just that when a person sets out on a weight reduction program, it is better to do it under the supervision of a physician.

Just as the heart is affected by obesity, it can also be adversely affected when there is sudden weight loss. Another method that was often adopted was a more careful one – whatever fatty food it was that the person liked, the same food could be cooked without the fat i.e., a low calorie, low fat alternative could be dished up and used as a substitute.

Hypnosis has also been used as a technique for losing weight. Weight reduction is a long drawn process if it is to be effective. Short bursts of weight loss cause more harm than anything. The idea is to find out which is the healthiest way to shed those extra pounds.
